Michelle Obama – “The Reason I’m standing here…Education.”

10 December, 2010

Sometimes I like to put up videos of other people saying things that I think are important.  And, if anyone would like to doubt that education is vitally important, please read on.

In an apolitical speech given at a UK all-girls school, the First Lady tells of how she was from a working-class family and community, raised with love, strong values and the belief in the ability of education and hard work to combine into great accomplishments.

She then makes the point that while there is a great difference between the way the world is, right now, and the way the world should be, we should not accept that difference simply because it’s always been there.

Michelle says that it is with education that people are able to reverse this – the students she is speaking to are going to be the fulcrums of history.

Some quotes:

“By getting a good education, you are in control of your own destiny”.

“History proves that it doesn’t matter if you come from a council estate or a country estate – your success will come from your own fortitude, your own confidence, your own individual hard work.”

“I hope in persuing your dreams, …you use your talents.   Because there are many.  We’ve seen them.”
